PA FOUNDATION HISTORY

The Princess Alexandra Hospital Research and Development Foundation was established in 1984.

In the past 23 years it has raised and distributed $18 million to aid research at Princess Alexandra Hospital.

The name of the foundation was changed to the Princess Alexandra Hospital Foundation in 1999 and to the PA Foundation in 2006.

The PA Foundation is covered by a special Act of the Queensland Parliament. All funds raised go to medical research and a Queensland Government auditor audits our accounts each year.

The PA Foundation has funded hundreds of research projects. Click here to view Research Page.

The Princess Alexandra Hospital is an accredited teaching hospital and the University of Queensland employs many of the scientists assisted.

The PA Foundation has a general policy of funding scientists whose work is at the preliminary stage. Some may have difficulty gaining funds from other research bodies. The competition for research funding is fierce. This policy has borne fruit. Scientists supported by the PA Foundation have achieved breakthroughs in the areas of Transplantation, Cancer, Diabetes, Melanoma and Parkinson's Disease.

A Grants Research Committee critically reviews grant applications. Members of this committee are some of Queensland's leading scientists and medical specialists.

This committee has to agree on both the ethical nature of the research and to ensure that funds expended are not wasted in an area which may have been traversed by other scientists.
