There is no known cure or treatment to stop Alzheimers disease, a degenerating illness that robs people of their memory, ability to think and behave and eventually leads to death. However, with the help of amazing people like Michael Sherrin and Dr Paul Varghese there is hope that funds raised for research will unlock the Alzheimer’s roulette to find better outcomes and treatments for Alzheimer’s patients.

Michael, a Bayside resident, sadly lost his wife Helen to Alzheimer’s a few years after she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of the disease for a person in their forties. Helen was a patient of Dr Varghese and his team at the Princess Alexandra Hospital where they worked on trialling new therapeutics which gave her an extended eighteen months of precious time without which she would not have been able to come to terms with the disease and say goodbye to her family.

Unfortunately Dr Varghese and his team’s efforts were not enough to help Helen survive the disease. However, as a result of the outstanding treatment and support that Helen and the Sherrin family received during this trying time, Michael organised a Riverfire Charity Gala Dinner in memory of Helen, to raise significant funds to allow Dr Varghese and his team to push forward with their research and help support other families coming to terms with the disease.

“The Riverfire Charity Gala Dinner is our way of celebrating Helen’s life and most importantly to raise funds so we can help other families affected by this disease,” said Michael.

Now, in it’s fourth year this Riverfire dinner was the most successful yet. It raised an outstanding $165,500 for the PA Research Foundation to support Dr Varghese’s team research and the hundreds of patients and families that will benefit from it. Mr Nick Allen, CEO of the PA Research Foundation said, “Because of people like Michael and his contribution to research, one day Alzheimers disease will be cured. The answers are out there. We just need to support the researchers and the doctors so that people like Helen will live a full life and have a chance to grow old.”

The Sherrins have been a major supporter of the PA Research Foundation over the last few years and have played a significant role in raising substantial funds for Alzheimer’s research, support and patient care. “Sherrin’s contribution means that we can look forward with hope and confidence that this funded research will continue and that, one day, with the perpetual advancement of medicine, we will find new breakthroughs, solutions and ultimately cures for the disease. Together we can make a difference” said Mr Allen.
