Valuable Support for Prostate Cancer Research
It is with great excitement that we would like to share the news which was announced in January from the Federal Government for a 7.5 million dollar funding grant to establish a Prostate Cancer Research Centre at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.
The announcement made by the Federal Treasurer, The Hon Wayne Swan came after months of tireless planning, ongoing negotiations and some of the world’s best prostate cancer research choreographed by a recipient of PA Research Foundation funding Professor Colleen Nelson and her team.
Mr Swan said, “This level of investment in prostate cancer is a first in Australia. It is about saving lives. When it comes to medical research this country punches well above its weight. We have been blessed with dedicated and visionary researchers who put this country on the map for world research.
“I have every confidence the research done will save many lives … I literally owe my life to them,” he said.
Professor Nelson said that “This announcement represents a great day for men suffering from prostate cancer, men that have survived prostate cancer and the men who will have to deal with prostate cancer in the future.”
She said that the Prostate Cancer Centre would be a “dedicated multidisciplinary effort working together to deal with what is a global problem with a global effort with global solutions.”
Mr Swan said, “As a prostate cancer survivor I know how invaluable the findings of the Prostate Cancer Research Centre and clinical trials will be, and I thank all who have made today’s announcement possible."
Along with continued support from the community through donations and participatory events like last year’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Luncheon we can individually and collectively help our researcher’s research see the light of day.
We congratulate Professor Nelson and her team and look forward to continuing our fundraising initiatives in support of her prostate cancer research.
