Does Bone Regulate Energy Metabolism in Humans?

Emma Duncan

The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that osteocalcin is involved in negative feedback between the skeleton and adipocytes, by determining the relationship between serum osteocalcin, amino-terminal telopeptide of type 1 procollagen (P1NP) [a marker of bone formation and osteoblast activity], fasting glucose, insulin, leptin, and adiponectin; and body composition assessed by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA), examining both fat and lean mass and bone mineral density (BMD); in obese and non-obese adults. Association analysis of bone mineral density and body composition with Osteocalcin, Leptin and Adiponectin will also be undertaken, examining single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs) and/or haplotypes of these genes in obese and non-obese adults.
