The University Of Queensland Diamantina Institute

The UQ Diamantina is one of the PA Research Foundation's largest recipient of funds.

The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute (UQDI) is a modern research facility where clinical and basic science converge in the translational research of cancer and disorders of immune regulation. Headed by Professor Matthew Brown, the Institute is host to over 200 researchers, students and support staff. It lays claim to the development of the world’s first cervical cancer vaccine.

Based at Brisbane’s leading teaching hospital, the Princess Alexandra Hospital, The University of Queensland Diamantina Institute has strong clinical interactions and world-class facilities. Researchers focus their efforts on turning their scientific discoveries into better treatments for chronic diseases including cancer and autoimmune diseases such as arthritis.

The aim of research at the Diamantina Institute is to develop a better understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of disease, and to translate that understanding into practical outcomes for patients. Translational research attempts to connect basic scientific research with real patient outcomes. Bringing discoveries quickly to the aid of patients is central to the mission of the Diamantina Institute, and as a result it often has a number of clinical and research trials running concurrently to lab-based research.

Research activities at UQDI focus on the following areas:

·    Autoimmunity

·    Cancer

·    Bone and joint disease

·    Infection
