Catherine Cheung

Name: Catherine Cheung

Research Group/Institute:  Haematology Research Laboratory, and Diamantina Institute, Princess Alexandra Hospital

Research Interest/Field: Cancer research- Chemokine expression in the bone marrow of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).  In general terms, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia is a common type of blood cancer that is usually diagnosed in the elderly and remains incurable. Progress towards cure for CLL has been hampered by lack of cell lines and animal studies. We were able to grow the leukaemic cells outside the body in a flask. Furthermore, we identified 2 novel chemokines. Chemokine is a type of protein growth factor that is required by leukaemic cells. We believe that chemokines are one of the important factors which contribute to the growth of CLL cells. By targeting the action of the chemokines may provide us with another treatment strategy.

What made you decide to work in this field? Firstly, my passion for cancer research has kept me working in the field for the last 15 years of my research career. Of course, a series of life circumstances has also played a part in leading me to my current work position. I am certainly blessed to have the opportunity to work in one of the major tertiary hospitals in Australia. This has provided me with convenient access to a valuable source of patient pathological materials for research and a team of expert research personnel. I think great intellectual and financial support have been the major contributing factors for me to continue working in this field.

What is the goal and significance of your research that you would like people to know? We hope that by understanding the role of chemokines in regulating the survival of CLL cells, we can develop effective therapeutic strategies based on targeting the chemokines.

If you were at a dinner party and someone asked you what you are researching, what would you say? I am studying the biological factors which contribute to the growth of a type of blood cancer found in the elderly.

How does or how has or how will funding from a Foundation help your research project? The funding will provided much needed funds for the purchase of consumables (such as equipments for microscopy and reagents) and the salary of research staff. The funds will also serve as a foundation onto which I can build up my goal for applying for other major research funding.

What is on your research wish list? To win my first National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project grant.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work? Spending time with my family- I am raising two young sons and will take every opportunity to be with my children when I’m not at work. The highlights of my day include teaching my children about how something works, and telling them children’s stories from both the Western and the Eastern cultures. Participation in church activities- Maintaining a healthy spiritual well-being and close contact with a circle of friends who share the same world view, provide me with strength and direction to cope with the ever changing circumstances in life. Reading- My reading interest is quite diverse. Some of favourite topics include psychology, motivational/self-help, relationship, history, health, science, philosophy, education and the arts.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a researcher? If I weren’t a researcher, I would probably be a teacher of some kind- a university lecturer/tutor, or a high school teacher.

What are you most proud of? My persistence and determination in making a difference to everyday life, even if things do not always work my way.
