Jessica Abbott
Name: Jessica Abbott (APD, AN, ASD)
Department/Ward: From the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics but I work within Cancer Services at the PAH
Interest/Field: Oncology and Haematology in particular Adolescent and Young Adult oncology.
What made you decide to work in this field? I have always been interested in nutrition, but growing up it was mainly sports nutrition that I wanted my career to be in. I am fortunate enough to work as a sports dietician on top of working full time at the PAH. Clinically speaking, I really love the work I do now as a dietician in cancer services. I enjoy working with such a diverse population of patients but also my colleagues from medicine, nursing and allied health.
What is the goal of your work/study that you would like people to know?
My goal is to provide high quality nutrition support to patients during their
cancer treatments.
If people could make a difference by changing one thing about their
eating/lifestyle habits which one would you recommend changing?
Keep the alcoholic drinks to a minimum…
What’s the silliest nutrition/diet tip that you have heard?
There are so many! But I think the ones that place a cut off time on eating carbohydrates annoy me the most…
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
Head to the movies, try new restaurants, relax by the pool or at the beach
What would you be doing if you weren’t working in dietetics?
I’d probably be working as a sports scientist/ exercise physiologist/biomechanist
What’s your favourite indulgence?
Good quality cheese of all kinds!
What are you most proud of?
Winning a medal in swimming at the 2002 Commonwealth Games as a 16 year old!
