2009 Results: For the first time in the Great Brisbane Duck Race history the PA Research Foundation celebrated a successful new event on the race calendar the inaugural Corporate Duck Race.

Over 20 businesses entered the race which took place on the Brisbane River at South Bank on Saturday, September 26th. The ducks were different of course to the normal rubber duckies that go into the main race with the corporate ducks about 6 times the size of your average rubber duck.

The objective was to be the first duck to cross the finish line over the 100m course on the Brisbane River and win the naming rights to next years race however the rules were different for the corporate race – there were none! This left many businesses and their technicians pondering the question.
What type of duck would it take to win the Corporate Duck Race?
A feathery duck? A glittery duck? A surfing duck? Plucka Duck?
So it was, weeks before the inaugural Corporate Duck Race entrants all over Brisbane were modifying, painting, and gluing their ducks in the name of being the first ever winner of the race. As the race day dawned and the sun rose final preparations were in place for the event of the calendar year. Entrants proudly showed their designs to the competition minutes before the start. There were gasps and ooh’s as some of the ducks resembled entrants into the power boats championships.
Waterway Contstructions impressed the crowds with their one metre design of a speed boat with the duck sitting on top. Pipe International had front mounted skies and a keel fitted to their duck along with a wireless camera hooked up to a video capture card so it can be piloted using a laptop. Then there were ducks with shower caps, ducks with bowties, ducks on surfboards and ducks with rubber floaties. The competition was tough and there were certainly a few ruffled feathers. Now the time had come to see who the best was. The ducks were carefully placed into the water at the starting line then after a big THREE, TWO, ONE off they went. It was a slow start for some who never quite made it off the start line and a great start for others but unfortunately some quacked it half way through the race.
The eventual winner was Results Web Designs from Oxford Street, Bulimba.
Director, Scott McNaught said it took over ten hours to construct their duck.
“Our first design didn’t do well after we took it for a test run in the Brisbane River so we spent the morning of the duck race looking for replacement parts. We eventually got it finished at midday in time to get to the race,” Mr McNaught said.
“We are proud to be associated with this event knowing that all funds raised are going towards cancer research. I encourage all businesses in and around Brisbane to be part of this event next year. Not only is it a fun day but you will be making a difference to people’s lives now and into the future.” Results Web Design duck was a modified version of the children’s surfing toy. The duck was attached to the top of the surfboard with a remote control. Just the right amount of modification to get them across the finish line and become the first ever winners of the Corporate Duck Race.
The crowds soaked up the atmosphere of the day and the corporate event with cheers and jeers from the sideline as some ducks powered towards the finish line and others just lingered in the wings enjoying a day on the Brisbane River.
For many competitors and supporters it’s now back to the drawing board for next year as many re-design their duck to win the ultimate duck race. But even though there could only be one duck race winner, everyone acknowledges the real winner is the PA Research Foundation with all funds raised going towards cancer research on the PA Hospital Campus.
The success of the inaugural Corporate Duck Race could not have been made achieved without the support of the sponsors and businesses involved. The PA Research Foundation’s Great Brisbane Duck Race and the Corporate Duck Race will be back next year bigger and better as we continue to raise funds towards finding a cure for cancer. So get flapping and start quacking about the Corporate Duck Race!
Thank you!
