PA Research Foundation announced more than $1.4 million in funding for transformational medical research projects at the Metro South Health Research Support Scheme Awards Night on 30 November.
Among the award recipients of the Foundation's 2021 research awards were six new $100,000 research award projects, in addition to continued funding of $100,000 each to three separate ongoing projects.
More than $590,000 in funding was also allocated among several other collaborative health research initiatives, including skin cancer, head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer and more. The Foundation also announced $75,000 thousand in funding for novel emergency medicine research in a first for the organisation.
Each awardee and their collaborative teams were chosen for the potential of their work to improve outcomes for thousands of Queenslanders and millions of Australians.
PA Research Foundation Chief Executive Officer Damian Topp said PA Research Foundation prided itself on funding work that has a translational or 'bench to bedside' approach.
"Some of the brightest minds and most dedicated health researchers in the country are based right here at the PA Hospital, and it is our absolute privilege and pleasure to support them," he said.
"Their mission is the same as ours, to help improve the health and wellbeing of patients here at the PA Hospital and right around the world."
Mr Topp said it was the commitment of the Foundation's donors and supporters that enabled the Foundation to provide the increased level of funding, despite tough economic conditions presented through 2020.
"Our supporters big or small continue to amaze us each and every day with their generosity and passion for helping others, everything we do is made possible by their altruism."
