The Smiddy Fun Run is BACK!

A much-loved event at the PA Hospital, the Smiddy Fun Run is back.

The annual fun run around the PA hospital campus, which honours the life of PA Physiotherapist Adam Smiddy, will return to its original format of a 2.5km or 5km fun run on March 2 after two years as an online fitness week due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Smiddy started in 2006, as a way to honour Adam Smiddy’s love of fitness, and raise awareness of and funds for melanoma research, after Adam sadly passed away at just 26 years of age as a result of an aggressive melanoma.

All funds raised from the event will go towards melanoma research on the PA Hospital campus.

Starting at 6am, the run is open to not just the PA Community but runners and walkers of all ages and anyone who wants to make a difference in the quest for solutions to a disease that will affect more than 17,000 Australians this year.

PA Research Foundation (PARF) has a proud history of supporting melanoma research, including a decade of funding work by the University of Queensland’s Dermatology Research Centre, which is based on the PA campus.

The Foundation also played a major role in the development of the Vectra 3D imaging machine which has the potential to revolutionize melanoma diagnosis in Australia, providing funding for the first ever Vectra prototype.

PARF Chief Executive Officer said he was looking forward to pounding the pavement again in March.

“Australia’s is known as the melanoma capital of the world and we have to keep striving to change that by raising funds for better treatments and lifesaving diagnostic options like the Vectra,” he said.

“But Smiddy is about more than just raising funds and awareness, it’s a day for the PA Community to come together to exercise and enjoy each other’s company and remember a valued colleague and great friend.”

“I hope that not just those that knew Adam, but all of the PA Community join me for a run in March.”

Over 1200 Australians will pass away this year as a result of a melanoma diagnosis.

The Smiddy Fun Run would not be possible without the support of the Port of Brisbane.
