What is Functional Neurological Disorder?

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) can cause a variety of symptoms that cannot be explained by an underlying disease or anatomical abnormalities. Common problems in patients with FND are episodes of blackouts, weakness and abnormal movements.

The problem lies in how the brain processes information and communicates with the body, rather than in structural damage to the brain.

About the Queensland Functional Neurological Disorder Special Interest Group

The Queensland Functional Neurological Disorder Special Interest Group (FND SIG) was established in 2019. Membership in the special interest group is available to Queensland Health, Department of Education or non-government organisation clinicians and other identified key stakeholders in Queensland. Currently the FND SIG has healthcare professional membership from all Queensland health services across a wide variety of healthcare specialties.

The special interest group was set up to connect health professionals in Queensland who work with patients with Functional Neurological Disorders to:

  • Provide support and advice to Queensland clinicians managing patients with FND
  • Share knowledge, expertise and resources regarding managing FND
  • Develop FND educational resources for therapists and patients
  • Streamline and develop pathways for FND services for patients across the state
  • Build and sustain a network of clinicians across Queensland working in FND management
  • Collaborate and coordinate state-wide evaluation strategies, education and research opportunities in FND

To achieve these goals the FND SIG provides regular online and in-person professional development for its members. It facilitates and supports research projects in the field of Functional Neurological Disorder through mentoring and research grants. The SIG also hosts an annual FND symposium for members and other interested clinicians for clinical and research updates as well as networking opportunities. The SIG also publishes written and online educational resources for use in clinical practice.

The Queensland Functional Neurological Disorder Special Interest Group is an official partner of the international Functional Neurological Disorder Society.
