The PA Research Foundation’s impact on healthcare during the 2024/25 financial year has been significant, with an estimated financial contribution of $3 million, supporting numerous projects.
All of this is made possible by those who choose the Foundation as their place to give. Generosity which is essential in transforming healthcare practices, advancing research, and improving patient care. Here are some of what we made possible this past year thanks to the kindness of our supporters
Foundation funding enabled the recruitment of an Orthopaedic Surgery Fellow specialising in sarcoma, also known as Ortho-Oncology. This specialised role is critical in advancing research on musculoskeletal cancers, focusing on the latest treatments and improving patient outcomes. This fellowship is not only helping to push the boundaries of sarcoma treatment, but also providing young doctors with invaluable hands on experience and mentorship in a highly specialised field. It is also the first type of this fellowship in Queensland.
In cancer services, the Foundation helped acquire a TE5 Series medical device, equipped with full vascular capabilities. This cutting-edge equipment is pivotal in enabling more accurate diagnostics and treatment for a range of cancers. Particularly, it can accurately identify vascular involvement, which is crucial for effective treatment planning. The TE5 Series will aid doctors in delivering more targeted therapies, reducing the risk of complications, and enhancing patient survival rates.
Another cancer project, the Multi-Omic Tissue Atlas project, was launched supporting a data scientist for 18-24 months. This project supports multiple PA led collaborative projects in lung, skin, melanoma, and head and neck cancers championed by Associate Professor Arutha Kulashinge. This will drive innovations and ultimately, advance personalised medicine and improve survival outcomes for patients.
The Gamma Knife Fellowship, supported by the Foundation, has provided essential training and expertise in Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. This advanced treatment technique is pivotal for treating brain tumours and other neurological conditions without the need for invasive surgery. The fellowship has enhanced the department’s capability to treat patients more effectively, providing life changing treatments to those who might otherwise not have had viable options.
Foundation support also allowed the Dementia Unit to be furnished and equipped with state-of-the-art tools for the newly established PAH Cognition Support Unit. This unit will provide critical care for dementia patients, offering specialised services and support to improve cognitive function, reduce confusion, and enhance overall well-being. This facility has been a much-needed addition to the hospital, helping to address the growing demand for dementia care.
In the mental health sector, Dan Siskind’s CanCloz research was also supported, which focuses on reducing psychotic symptoms in people with schizophrenia. This research is vital in improving treatment options for individuals with treatment-resistant schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses. The results from this research are expected to significantly improve patient care by enhancing medication efficacy and reducing side effects.
The PARO robotic seal, funded for use in the social work department, is a groundbreaking therapy tool. Used primarily in palliative care, dementia, and mental health, the robotic seal provides comfort to patients, offering an emotional connection to those suffering from conditions like autism, PSTD, and social isolation. This form of animal-assisted therapy has shown to reduce anxiety and improve the emotional wellbeing of patients, demonstrating the positive impact of innovative technology in healthcare.
